Volleyball tournament formats

There are five common volleyball tournament formats: group stage with a knockout bracket, round robin, Swiss system, single elimination and double elimination. The practical difference is not the name but how many matches the first loser gets: with 16 teams, single elimination is 15 matches and double elimination is 30.

The five formats, and what each is for

Groups + bracket is the standard open: everyone gets their group matches guaranteed, then the cut. Round robin is everyone against everyone and gives the fairest table there is, but it grows with the square: 12 teams is 66 matches. The Swiss system pairs each round off the standings, eliminating nobody and playing far from everything — it is what you pick when there are many teams and little time.

Single elimination is the shortest format there is and the worst one if people travelled to get there: half the bracket plays one match and leaves. Double elimination fixes exactly that — you have to lose twice to be out — at the price of nearly doubling the matches.

Gold, silver and bronze: the setting almost nobody configures

Cut a 24-team field at the top eight and you have just sent sixteen teams home, all of whom came to play. A second bracket (silver), sometimes a third (bronze), gives them a competition of their own instead.

This is not decoration: it is the difference between people coming back next year and not. And it is cheap in matches, because the secondary brackets are small.

How the choice is really made

Nobody picks "double elimination". They pick "everyone should get at least two matches" or "we need to finish by seven", and the format follows. So the useful thing is not the list of formats but the count: how many matches, how many the worst-off team gets, and what time you finish on the courts you have.
