Guide
How many matches you get with X players
A 2v2 americano runs for as many rounds as there are players minus one, with one match per four players in each round. With 16 players on four courts that is 15 rounds and 60 matches — about 3 hours 45 minutes at 15 minutes a round.
The maths, in one line
Matches per round = players ÷ players per match, rounded down and capped by the courts you have. Rounds for a full rotation = players − 1 in 2v2, because each round hands you one of the partners you still owe. Total matches = rounds × matches per round.
The only correction is resting: if players are left over, the rotation stretches in the same proportion as the people sitting off court. The calculator below already applies it.
How many courts you actually need
With as many courts as matches per round, everyone plays at once and the afternoon lasts exactly as long as the rotation. One court short and the same americano takes proportionally longer, with dead time appearing between rounds — which is when people drift off.
Rule of thumb on sand: one court per four players in 2v2. If you have a single court and there are twelve of you, plan on playing fewer rounds rather than the whole rotation — the table is just as fair even if not every pairing gets played.
When the clock decides, not the rotation
Almost nobody plays the full rotation: you play until it gets dark. Decide how long you have, divide by the minutes per round, and play that many rounds. Two hours at 15 minutes a round is eight rounds, whether you are 8 people or 20.
What changes with the number of players is not how long it lasts, but how many matches each person gets and how many different people they end up playing with.

Frequently asked questions
- How many matches do 16 players get?
- In 2v2 on four courts, 15 rounds of 4 matches: 60 matches in total, and every player plays all 15. At 15 minutes a round that is 3 hours 45 minutes.
- And with 8 players?
- Seven rounds of two matches, 14 matches in total, and about an hour and three quarters. It is the shortest americano worth setting up.
- How long is a beach volleyball round?
- Between 12 and 20 minutes when played on the clock. Fifteen minutes a round is right nearly every time, once you count changing courts and the breather between matches.
- Better to play to a score or on the clock?
- On the clock, if you have more than one court. Playing to a score, courts finish at different times and the whole round waits for the slowest one — that is where the dead time comes from.
